June 5        6:30 pm
Location:    West Tennessee Research and Education Center
    Program:    Bonsai:The Living Art Form
    Presenter:   Fred Nowack
Having served 20 years in the U.S. Navy, Fred retired in 1968 and settled down in Memphis, TN. He went to work as the Chief Administrative Officer opening Arlington Developmental Center. After 6 years at Arlington, he went to LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center as the Chief Operating Officer and then some 10 years later to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the same capacity. He retired in March of 1994 and became interested in the Art of Bonsai after he attended the Bonsai Exhibition held at the Memphis Botanic Garden on Mother’s Day weekend that same year. Fred feels that collecting Bonsai is like eating potato chips- you can’t stop at one. He has enjoyed that hobby immensely, has about 40 trees, and attends workshops regularly to learn more about this “living art form”. It is a very relaxing hobby that can provide a great deal of personal satisfaction but one in which one must be prepared to wait years before the tree or plant will look like he/she wants it to look. Cecile does not have to look far for Fred. He is usually in the backyard working on or just enjoying his collection of bonsai trees. Both Fred and Cecile have been members of the Memphis Horticultural Society since the early nineties and have been Master Gardeners since 1998.
